New music: Erica Rabner – “We Got This”

Sometimes inspiration can rise from bad experiences or events. Over the last year, a lot of kindie artists wrote and recorded songs to teach kids how to stay safe during the early unknowns of the pandemic and others released songs of hope to keep spirits up. Erica Rabner is one of the kindie artists who’s done both. She released The Covid Album: Songs to Help Kids and Families Cope in February, intended to help younger kids in the Pre-K and Kindergarten range learn about safety measures they can take.

She’s releasing her next album, We Got This, on April 23rd. It’s geared toward kids in the older elementary school age bracket. “I wanted to offer optimistic anthems celebrating how we’ve coped and how we continue to support one another. Now that we’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, it helps to reflect on what we have been going through,” says Rabner. The album takes listeners through the past year, touching on the nervousness, isolation, and fear of not knowing what was going to happen.

“We Got This” is the first single from the album and references those early uncertain times, but highlights the moments we stayed strong and persisted through this strange experience. Watch the new lyric video below. The single is also available to stream or purchase.

“Mother, Mother” music video

For decades popular artists have dipped their toes in the waters of kids music. The latest crossover is Tracy Bonham with her new album Young Maestros Vol.1. Tracy made a name for herself with her hit “Mother, Mother” reaching number one in 1996 on the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart, a feat no other solo-female artist had achieved until Lorde’s single “Royals” in 2013. “Many artists start recording and releasing children’s music when they become parents. In my case, I started writing music for young people as an exercise in delivering a better way for children to learn the fundamentals of music. I believe children learn more effectively if and when they are enraptured in a catchy song with educational concepts,” Bonham says.

Last year as the pandemic grounded plans for her next album, Tracy turned her attention to Melodeon Music House, a project she’d been working on for quite some time. “When I was young, I was enraptured by the music of Schoolhouse Rock, Sesame Street, and Electric Company. This material was the foundation for my learning before I entered kindergarten. I would like to give the same opportunity to young children today with my own twist. I want to give children a foundation for learning the concepts and fundamentals of music and how these fundamentals can pertain to their lives.” She adds their mission is “to engage children in learning while having fun.”

The latest single from the album, “Beats on a Measure”, makes the children in her class smile. “This song starts off with a rapid fire lyrical explanation of simple time signatures in western music. Time signatures like 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, and 1/4. When I teach this song, I often hear young children laughing during the introduction because of the quick pace as the words fly by. The children know it is funny even if they don’t catch every single word,” she says.

Watch the new video for the song and you’ll get just a small taste of what I’m sure a class with Tracy Bonham is like.

New Music: Rabbit! – “Happiness is Simple”

Every once in a while an artist arrives in the kindie scene by sheer coincidence. For example, the duo known as Rabbit!, Ashton Allen and Devon Moore, fell into the genre as an off-shoot from their job writing and recording songs for TV commercials. “Neither one of us had any intention of starting a kids band or being in the children’s music sphere,” said Allen. One particular style of music they made garnered attention from more family-friendly advertisers. Allen added, “It wasn’t long before we realized we had stumbled into this niche space where not only were kids of all ages really freaking out to the songs, but, and this is perhaps because the songs were never intended for kids, adults and parents loved it as well.”

Today, after two full-length albums, three EPs, and multiple singles, they share the first single and title track from their fourth EP, Happiness is Simple, set to release April 2nd. According to Moore, “The phrase ‘happiness is simple’ is one of those seemingly throw-away, self help-y sentiments that have been floating around in our collective consciousnesses on Instagram feeds, blog-o-spheres, etc. for so long that it’s become a bit of background noise. I thought I’d use it as a ‘song starter’ and see if there was or wasn’t something to this idea.” Initially starting with voice and ukulele, their ideas for the track eventually grew. A lot. “At the end of the song we stripped away all the hubbub and brought back the simple voice and ukulele,” Moore said, adding, “A uke, a few simple chords, and an easy-breezy melody. Sometimes happiness IS just that simple.”

Now enjoy the latest single and video from Rabbit!, “Happiness is Simple”. Links to purchase or stream the song are listed below as well.
