Video Premiere: Eric Herman and the Puppy Dogs – “Googly Eyes”

It’s been a little while since we’ve heard some new music from Eric Herman. He’s back, sans The Invisible Band and adding The Puppy Dogs, with his latest album, Magic Beans, releasing in March. The first single is “Googly Eyes”. Eric describes the song as “funny, catchy, with a Schoolhouse Rock feel.” He adds, “this was one of those rare ‘woke up at 3 a.m. and here was a song, virtually complete’ kind of things.”

The song follows a kid who loves to “enhance” everything with plastic googly eyes. As the song states, “everything’s better with googly eyes.” “Everything” includes monuments, bridges, historical structures, even classical works of art. Eric says, “the kid is seen as ‘vandalizing’ monuments and art works, but it’s his art. He adds the song “sets up the idea that we shouldn’t take things too seriously, which comes back in the medley at the end.”

Eric Herman and his daughter storyboarded the video and the animation is by Geoffrey Sinn and team at Studio Ace Productions. Watch the video below for “Googly Eyes”.

Video Premiere: Flor Bromley – “Mango’s Tango”

Flor Bromley’s music is influenced by many different Latin American songs and styles. She says all of her music styles come from a part of her background. Her latest album takes a closer look at nature, hence the title Pachamama who is considered an Earth Mother or goddess in Inca mythology. Her love of musical theatre and pop music are both on display here. “I like how both of those styles go deep into discoveries while having up-beat tempos,” says Flor.

Her latest single, “Mango’s Tango”, follows a mango who is not allowed to be who he wants to be. This came from Bromley’s own experience in Peru. “I was laughed at for liking Musical Theatre because it’s not a common thing.” She adds, “this song is for everybody out there to remember to shine their light and be allowed to like whatever they want and show it because differences are what makes things interesting.”

The songs on Pachamama are in English and Spanish, making it a great way for kids to dip their toes into learning a different language. Watch her new video below for “Mango’s Tango”.

Claudia’s released and new video for the song “Kids in Autumn”. Of course in her homeland of New Zealand they’re getting into Spring time.

In the video, our little penguin friends have left the beach and head to the woods to enjoy the changing leaves and roasting marshmallows. The season gives the opportunity for the family to spend more time inside where it’s cozy.

Check out the video below. The version of the song used here is an acoustic track which is different than the album version. Both are wonderful.

Video Premiere: The Harmonica Pocket – “Sand Song”

The Harmonica Pocket has a few albums under their belt in the family music genre. Typically falling somewhere between Americana and Indie, their music has a gentle aspect to it without sounding watered down.

Their next album, Sing Your Song, releases in October. Frontman Keeth Apgar continues his tradition of a simplistic and earthy recording technique, also including family members. “I record in a humble home studio powered by solar electricity. I use wood to heat the space so there’s actually a lot of prep, planning and wood splitting before I play a single note. My albums take a long time to produce this way but it’s how I make it happen.” Apgar adds, “I’m always writing. It’s how I make sense of the world around me. At some point I look at the pile of songs lying on the carpet and realize it’s time to make a record. Some of these songs were accidentally written while trying to eat breakfast. Three songs were co-written with my son which really brought the family music thing full circle for me. I try to let the songs comes when they want to.”

The first single is “Sand Song”. “I started writing this song on the beach one day. I didn’t know where it was going, but some of the rhymes were ridiculous (and true!) so I just went with it. Sometimes I just have discover the song as I go. And kick a little sand around in the process.” The song has a deeper message than you might realize at first listen. “Everyone has problems. For me “Sand Song” is about giving and receiving support for the challenges in our lives. It’s my way of saying (what Bill Withers put so well!) we all need somebody to lean on.”

The video seems just as upbeat as the song itself. “Kids are always getting blamed for making messes. I thought it’d be fun to twist things up and make my own mess, get covered in sand, fall in the water in full clothes and all that stuff. In the same sort of way that you might let a kid win at a game of checkers I thought it would be empowering for kids to see a grownup getting outwitted by a couple of trickster kids.”

Sing Your Song will be out October 20th. Check out the video for “Sand Song” below.
