Before I get into this song, I have a confession to make. Nine times out of ten, when I get a kindie album with children singing, I cringe. It’s meant to be cute, I guess, but usually it’s just bad. That’s my opinion. But every once in awhile a band turns the mic over to the younger voice and it works. Point in case, The Oot n’ Oots.
When I first heard Ruth sing on “I Like it Saucy” from the album Electric Jellyfish Boogaloo, I thought she was an older teen at the youngest, maybe early twenties. She wasn’t even 13. Her voice can easily stand along side some soulful singers who are decades her senior.
Thank You Universe is a light-hearted, yet sorely needed, new single from the band. It reminds the listener to be thankful and joyful. Ruth, now 13 years old, furthers the spectrum of her voice. And while her vocals take center stage, the music on this song is spectacular. There’s no way to pigeon hole it into a single genre. It’s just fun.
