New Music: The Oot n’ Oots – “Thank You Universe”

Before I get into this song, I have a confession to make. Nine times out of ten, when I get a kindie album with children singing, I cringe. It’s meant to be cute, I guess, but usually it’s just bad. That’s my opinion. But every once in awhile a band turns the mic over to the younger voice and it works. Point in case, The Oot n’ Oots.

When I first heard Ruth sing on “I Like it Saucy” from the album Electric Jellyfish Boogaloo, I thought she was an older teen at the youngest, maybe early twenties. She wasn’t even 13. Her voice can easily stand along side some soulful singers who are decades her senior.

Thank You Universe is a light-hearted, yet sorely needed, new single from the band. It reminds the listener to be thankful and joyful. Ruth, now 13 years old, furthers the spectrum of her voice. And while her vocals take center stage, the music on this song is spectacular. There’s no way to pigeon hole it into a single genre. It’s just fun.

New Music: Jazzy Ash – “Teddy Bear”

Jazzy Ash has released some stellar music for kids over the years. The styles have touched on New Orleans jazz, swing music, and even a little Dixieland.

Her next endeavor will be a collection of soul songs which I can’t wait for. The first single, “Teddy Bear“, is a twist on a classic jump rope sing-a-long. The power of her vocals never cease to amaze me. You can hear and feel nothing but pure joy in her voice. Listen to the new song and remember to support these amazing kindie artists.

From Jazzy Ash herself, “The most resilient thing about Black Americans is our ability to find joy in the midst of darkness. Here’s a new song I made with my community. I hope you enjoy it, and maybe give yourself permission to dance.”

New Music: The Okee Dokee Brothers

The Okee Dokee Brothers have made quite an impact on the world of Kindie music. The duo, Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing, have put their down-home style of Bluegrass and Americana on six albums over 10 years. They’ve seen their work nominated for multiple Grammys in the Best Children’s Music category, taking home the trophy in 2013 for Can You Canoe.

Now, 12 years after their debut album, they’re back with album number seven, a massive two-disc collection of songs “to heal the soul during difficult times”. This album is meant as a true family experience. Songs that will make you think about how we see the world and what’s going on around us. Songs For Singin’ has many nods to folk singers of the past, particularly Woody Guthrie. Guthrie’s influence is evident on songs like “Hope Machine”, “Music Train”, and “Hushabye”. Pete Seeger’s influence can be heard in “If You Want a Song”.

Nate Ryan Photography

Songs For Singin’ has 27 songs between the two discs. Some stand out tracks are “Hope Machine”, “Neighborhood Band”, “Campin'”, and “Let’s Throw a Party”. Of course, these selections only scratch the surface of the brilliance of the album.

The Okee Dokee Brothers have once again produced a real gem with this huge endeavor. These songs will put a smile on your face, make you think, make you laugh, and make you love one another.

Watch the video below for the first single from the album, “Hope Machine”.

New Video: The Aquabats! – “Pajamazon!”

The Aquabats have a brand new video to accompany the latest single from their forthcoming album, Kooky Spooky… In Stereo! “Pajamazon!” seems like a very appropriate song right now. Let’s face it, even if we’re schooling or working from home we’ve all been a little lazy recently.

“Pajamazon!” brings back some that old-school Aquabats sound with the horns a little more prominent than they’ve been lately.

The new album is due out June 20th. It will be a welcome addition to your Aquabats catalog and fun for the whole family.

Check out the new video for “Pajamazon!” below and have a super fun time, kiddos!
