Video Premiere: The Harmonica Pocket – “Sand Song”

The Harmonica Pocket has a few albums under their belt in the family music genre. Typically falling somewhere between Americana and Indie, their music has a gentle aspect to it without sounding watered down.

Their next album, Sing Your Song, releases in October. Frontman Keeth Apgar continues his tradition of a simplistic and earthy recording technique, also including family members. “I record in a humble home studio powered by solar electricity. I use wood to heat the space so there’s actually a lot of prep, planning and wood splitting before I play a single note. My albums take a long time to produce this way but it’s how I make it happen.” Apgar adds, “I’m always writing. It’s how I make sense of the world around me. At some point I look at the pile of songs lying on the carpet and realize it’s time to make a record. Some of these songs were accidentally written while trying to eat breakfast. Three songs were co-written with my son which really brought the family music thing full circle for me. I try to let the songs comes when they want to.”

The first single is “Sand Song”. “I started writing this song on the beach one day. I didn’t know where it was going, but some of the rhymes were ridiculous (and true!) so I just went with it. Sometimes I just have discover the song as I go. And kick a little sand around in the process.” The song has a deeper message than you might realize at first listen. “Everyone has problems. For me “Sand Song” is about giving and receiving support for the challenges in our lives. It’s my way of saying (what Bill Withers put so well!) we all need somebody to lean on.”

The video seems just as upbeat as the song itself. “Kids are always getting blamed for making messes. I thought it’d be fun to twist things up and make my own mess, get covered in sand, fall in the water in full clothes and all that stuff. In the same sort of way that you might let a kid win at a game of checkers I thought it would be empowering for kids to see a grownup getting outwitted by a couple of trickster kids.”

Sing Your Song will be out October 20th. Check out the video for “Sand Song” below.

New Music: Esther Crow – “Inchworm”

Esther Crow‘s first venture into family music was a few years ago with her band Thunder & Sunshine. That rock and roll aesthetic continues on her first solo kindie album, All Together Now. The album’s first single, “It’s So Easy Being Green”, has a lo-fi feel but retains the true spirit of rock.

These type important topics continue with “Bees, Beavers and Bats” which features Lucy Kalantari. There’s also room for silliness like in the song “Waddle Duck”. Then there’s the song of a shy little inchworm who just wants to get underground despite the critters who want to play.

Listen to the song and watch the beautiful new video for “Inchworm” below.

New Music: Claudia Robin Gunn – “Summertime & Sunshine”

New Zealand is known for its beauty, great surfing, and Hobbiton. But over the last few years, it seems as though its biggest export is great family music. Claudia Robin Gunn is one example of this. Hailing from Auckland, Claudia has a few releases under her belt through her Little Wild Music catalog.

Her latest album, Sing Through the Year: A Little Wild Childhood, “is designed to be enjoyed day by day, season by season, for musical fun all through the year,” according to her website. It continues, “the collection is a selection from Claudia’s kids songwriting notebooks, inspired by bright moments and experiences through the years as her children have grown.”

Enjoy her latest single from the album and a beautiful video in a pop-up book/water color style.

New Music: The Oot n’ Oots – “Pets”

With only two albums under their belt, The Oot n’ Oots have already made quite an impression on the kindie music scene. They’ll drop their third album, Ponderosa Bunchgrass and the Golden Rule, in September. Last summer we got a taste of what they’re cooking up for album number three with the song “Thank You Universe“.

Now we have another musical nugget from the next album with the song “Pets”. The band says it’s “a love song in the truest sense of the phrase”. They add, “It’s an ode to our four-legged companions.” The instrumentation on this song is impressive. Along with guitar and drums, we get a violin, glockenspiel, and an accordion.

There’s also a new lyric video along with the release of the single. Its visuals are simplistic yet it has a beautiful vintage feel to it. The illustrations “harken back to the Sesame Street aesthetic of the ’70s”, the band says.

Watch the new video below and keep your ears open for two more songs and videos soon from The Oot n’ Oots leading up to the September album release.
